Nurse - Cutaneous leishmaniasis Project

Main Objectives

  • Providing nursing, maternity & neonatal care, treatment and follow-up of patients in assigned ward (birthing/delivery unit, New Born Unit(NBU), ER, Triage, ANC, PNC, IPD etc) according to doctors’ prescriptions, protocols applied in service and universal hygiene standards/precautions, in order to ensure the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population


  • Nurse Midwife may have varied accountabilities as per the assigned ward : maternity, birthing/delivery unit,  New Born Unit(NBU), ER, Triage, ANC, PNC, IPD, and sterilization room etc.
  • Knowing, promoting, implementing and following up the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensuring high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment. Respecting medical secrets and confidentiality at all times.
  • Organizing and carrying out care and treatments according to medical prescriptions, and assisting during consultations, daily rounds and other medical procedures. Participating in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary.
  • Ensures  and supervises all aspects of maternity/neonatal care from Lady Health Visitor staff. Implement ANC/PNC/ delivery protocols in the birthing unit. Perform normal deliveries independently, including episiotomy if required.
  • Respond to nursing/obstetric emergencies/complicated deliveries and seek advice from the doctor/ specialist in complicated or high-risk cases.
  • Recognize, manage, and refer complications arising in the first, second or third stage of labor.
  • Prepare the patients for the C-section including counseling of the patients and their attendants as per standard operating procedures.
  • Together with Nursing Care Providers / Paramedic Helpers, monitor patient vital signs, calculation of the dosages. Ensure safe administration of oral, IM, IV drugs as per Doctors instructions/prescriptions and in accordance with MSF protocols.
  • Safe insertion and administration of IV cannula, taking IV blood, management of IV fluids, neonatal resuscitation (directly or by supervising LHVs, Nurse Assistants).
  • Identifying Sexually Gender Based Violence victims and referring them to the medical team so they can receive the necessary treatment. Knowing and is aware of the importance and appropriate use of the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Kit
  • Ensuring patients are properly received and installed and that those with lack of autonomy are assisted, especially regarding their feeding, personal hygiene, movements and comfort. For ER and OPD nurse, ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas, wards or during emergencies, detecting the priority acute/emergency cases,  carrying out first aid care and referring them to the doctor when necessary
  • Sending material to be sterilized and recuperates it from sterilization
  • Carrying out admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients (i.e. assessment of the evolution of their state of health and the identification of any emergency situation or deterioration
  • Carrying and supervising administrative procedures and documents (fill in patient’s files, forms, consumptions, statistics, registers, health files, etc.), ensuring an appropriate written/oral handover, and reporting any problematic situations and cases that may arise. Participating in data collection and keeping doctors/supervisors informed .
  • Participating in the department-related pharmacy and medical equipment control and maintenance (quality and its functioning, storage conditions, follow-up of expired drugs inventories, stock takes of medicines and material at every team changeover ensuring no material is taken out of nursing area/wards without prior authorisation, etc.)
  • Perform cleaning and minor maintenance  for  biomedical equipment used. Fol-lowing the user manual and  protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning.
  • Supervising and training nurse-aids, LHVs, nursing care providers,  nutritional assistants, cleaners and other related staff under his/her supervision, ensuring teamwork and adherence to all appropriate protocols and procedures

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities:

  • Provide quality nursing care and follow-up of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) patients, during the cutaneous leishmaniasis clinical trial (CL CT) miltefosine & ThermoMed according the CL CT  protocol
  • Able to strictly follow the SOPs of the CL CT protocol and follow instructions given by the trial manager
  • Carry the overall responsibility of any CL CT nursing activities appropriately, skillfully and in accordance with MSF CL guidelines for the management of CL patients, but specifically the CL CT protocol and procedures in place, which may include:
  • Assesses the trial criteria (i.e. these eligible criteria are e.g: confirmed CL, ≥ 10 years old, not pregnant,  lesion ≤4cm,  not located on the ear, nose, near eye or mucosal membranes, patient with ≤4 lesions)
  • Make, if required, the photographs with the CL CT camera
  • Perform thermotherapy under supervision of a MD according CL CT protocol and ThermoMed manual
  • Perform appropriate wound care according CL CT SOPs
  • Monitor patient during the thermotherapy treatment; immediately report unexpected deviations to the doctor and follow his/her order how to respond on it
  • Do the registration and all follow up  procedures of the CL CT patients



  • Registered Nurse /Registered Midwifes (RNRMs) or BSN 4 years degree with valid Pakistan Nursing Council Registration


  • Desirable 2 years of previous experience and previous experience in other NGO’s
  • Demonstrable experience in supervising and training others in a team settin


Local language (Pashto)is essential. Persian desirable Mission language desirable
